I am creating a report and copy across large photos but really need to reduce their sizes. In excel for instance by holidng the shift/Ctrl (can't remember) and the copy function graphs etc can be pasted in with min size.

You can do direct in Word using the built in editing tools. Insert the picture (Insert/from file), then right click and select format picture. Use the size tab to resize and even crop the image. The advantage is you can do direct on the page to see the results in situ.

Or...

Most photo editing programs (including a popular free one called Irfanview) allow photos to be resized (or resolution to be changed).

In Irfanview you open the image, press Ctrl+R (or use Image, resize/resample) and select the new size. You can also use "Paint" (that comes with Windows) and use image/skew.

Try resizing to something like 640x480 to see how it looks.

Remember that while some programs allow the visible image to be resized to fit, if the underlying image is the original large size the document will be larger than necessary. It is therefore better to change the size of the embedded image to the smaller size to keep document size down.

You can do two things:

either reduce the whole picture,

or crop (cut off pieces off) the picture from any or all sides.

To reduce the picture, click on it and then go one of the coners and "pull it in inwards". If you pull on any side, this will make the picture "shorter" or "narrower" - this will not keep the picture proportional (try both options to see the difference).

To crop the picture, make sure you have your PICTURE toolbar selected

(if not go to TOOLBAR OPTIONS/ADD REMOVE BUTTONS/CUSTOMISE/mark the PICTURE toolbar). You will see the CROP icon (looks like XX on top of each other sideways in the top or bottom bars).

Click somewhere INSIDE the picture,

chose the CROP icon,

CUT OFF any pices from top, bottom, left, and/or right sides by PULLING INWARDS on the middle of any side on the little black line you see. If you cut off too much you can pull back out and you will get back what you had cropped.

Once picture is the size you want it, you can

RIGHT CLICK on pict

FORMAT PICTURE

LAYOUT

Choose IN FRONT OF TEXT and then you can place the picture where u want.

Play with the rest of the options to see what is the difference among them.

Hope doesn't sound confusing!

GOOD LUCK

use picasa from google. it's a wonder to use, and its free. you specify how much you want the image size reduced.

there's also fireworks from macromedia, but you have to buy that one, equally as good as picasa

Try this. Seems to work for me pretty well.
