XP hand's down and im a computer engineer Microsoft made a boob of vista and are currently trying to sort it out.

XP, by the time you have got rid of all the irritating features that make Vista too annoying to use, it becomes no more secure than XP. Vista has changed some common feature names for no reason and makes it less familiar. Vista has dropped support for certain applications thus forcing you to use theirs, which isn't acceptable. Vista is riduculously resource hungry, and unless you have a top spec machine with a good graphics card then it will perform more poorly than XP. Loads of other things, if I wrote them all I would be here for longer than I want to be

Everyone complains about Vista but to be honest I have not had a problem with it - it is faster than XP - better looking than XP - very easy to use and has the added bonus of READY BOOST - use a memory stick or card to boost memory.

All the old Windows/MS stuff works fine.

On the whole using common sense - i.e. from the change from Win98 to XP - it was OK - from XP to Vista - it's been a breeze - really nice to use.

Just consider the support life cycle for Windows. After a few years (typically about 5) MS stops supporting the previous version. How ever the drivers are more mature for an XP system right now. What it comes down to is how will you use your system? Right now gamers are typically better off on an XP box while most every day users are fine with a Vista box. One last thing to consider is the system resources available on your PC if you are going to upgrade.

As of now, use XP. XP has been out longer, therefor majority of the bugs have been worked out and most software has a strong support base. Eventually, you will probably want to transfer over to Vista once it becomes the more dominant OS.

Vista still has a lot of bugs and issues. Always a problem with new microsoft operating systems.

Use xp for now and give vista a few years for the bugs to be worked out.

XP.... vista is already being labelled the new ME. You just have to look at how long XP was Microsoft latest OS for, then compare that to the fact that Microsoft have already announced the release of a new OS set for 2009... even Microsoft have realised that vista is s**t!
2007-07-03 10:29:55 UTC
well in some time there will not be support for xp, due to the whole vista o.s. for desktops and the new vista server that will be coming out... i believe next year.

so my own advice, upgrade to vista now and learn it while it's still pretty new, so when more and more people start to move up, you are already there with no problems. know what i mean?

i myself use vista here at work and on my laptop and have NO problems what-so-ever.

maybe because i'm a computer tech at a college and a out-of-town business?

maybe.......

but either way i believe everyone will be on vista eventually, so might as well as learn it now.

It's somewhat dependent on quite a few different factors for instance:

How fast is your computer?

Do you play games?

Is all of your software compatible with Vista?

The best advice at the moment is to stay with Windows XP. Vista has quite a few 'dodgy' features like digital rights management which make it a rather shaky choice at the moment.

I would stick with xp for a couple of more years then change to vista. I had vista and has couple of problems. Hey the only problem Ive had it doesnt support many of my games so it kinda pisses me off.
taxed till i die,and then some.

3-The advanced microsoft system restore which act like if you have a norton ghost or deep freeze is very impressive and can solve many problems if you got a virus.

4-More secure than ever, more faster in both shutdown and restart.

5-come with all major and minor programs from microsoft like last version of IE,last version of movie maker, last version of windows live messenger, and windows defender.

6-Ultimate & Home Premium editions come with the complete media center edition.

7-The new microsoft email is very secure than microsoft outlook.

8-The integrated microsoft dvd maker and photo gallery is a great addition.

9-Windows automatic update is more easy than ever.

10-A lot of disk utilities has been improved like disk defragment and disk cleaner.

11-File encryption and decryption is included,so you can secure your files in an area on your hard drive.

Vista disadvantages:

Take a lot of resources, require 1GB of ram at least and 2mb L2 cache processor.

XP is now outdated and it is not having many features.

Vista has many new features but it is little expensive.most important thing is, it make the system slow.

Compare Windows XP with Windows Vista

With the introduction of Windows Vista, Microsoft has surged ahead in bringing out new features to old operating system Windows XP. In Windows Vista, Microsoft revamped several features which were present in Windows XP!

Compare installation phase

Let us start discussion on comparison from the process of installation itself. In Windows XP, the system prompts for user information, CD-Key, and other information etc. after the process of copying files is done. In Windows Vista, it will ask for information such as computer name, CD-Key before the copying process. One cannot install Windows Vista in drives formatted using FAT32 file systems! One need to have NTFS formatted partition for installation of Windows Vista, which aims at secured future operating systems. Security in FAT32 is less compared to NTFS. Installation process was also fast, compared to Windows XP.

Booting process

Next significant change is in the booting process. The NT Boot Loader which was present in the other older operating system has been replaced by Windows Boot Manager. Windows Vista does not allow storing our own or application files in Windows installed boot drives such as ‘C:’ for security reasons, for users including administrator.

Start Menu

Microsoft redesigned the desktop items, such as start menu. The task bar which consist of start button, which is similar in look of Windows XP start button. But, the default color of the task bar has been changed. Instead of classic blue, the default color has been changed to coffee black.

Aero & 3D Effect

There is a new feature called “Aero” which is enabled for use if the system contains a high graphics card, which supports DirectX 9.0 and higher. This feature which is not present in Windows XP enables one to view the open windows as 3D windows. The task bar and open windows can be given translucent, which means semi-transparent effect, through “Aero” option.

Larger Icons on Desktop

The address bar of the Windows Vista Explorer is redesigned to show path as “Computer > Local Disk (C:) > My Folder > My Next Level Folder >” instead of “C:My FolderMy Next Level Folder” which was in Windows XP. The icons appearing on the desktop has been made larger compared to Windows XP. Microsoft has done away with word “My” in the terms such as My Computer, My Document, in Windows Vista.

Sidebar to save time

Microsoft brought a side bar similar to the side bar of MS-Office 97. Programs can be quickly accessed, through customizable buttons provided for the purpose. We need not navigate through Start > Programs > Program Group > Program Name” to run a program. Instead, we can create a short cut on the side bar such that Program Name can be directly accessed.

Adding an old hardware devices have a problem in Windows Vista too, similar to Windows XP. It is said that Windows XP Compatible hardware doesn’t have any problems. Hardware devices which are not detected by Windows XP have problems in Vista too. So, look for a logo “Windows Vista or XP compatible” before buying the hardware. Some old devices can be made to work, if the manufacturer of the device can provide the needed XP or Vista compatible drivers. But, some old devices or the system itself may start to behave differently when we install a XP or Vista compatible drivers which are provided by the manufacturers.

Parental Control- Lets you control your Kid's activity

Vista on the other hand, has a new feature called Parental Control, which is not present in Windows XP. Parents can control their children who make use of the computer for playing their popular games. Parents can now deny access to the computer, deny playing games, and deny even surfing internet. Parents now even can check the status of guessing passwords.

Better Gaming performance

Performance wise, vista surges ahead compared to Windows XP. The various tests such as iTunes encoding, Photoshop CS2 image-processing, 3D games testing using F.E.A.R., has shown that better performance can be achieved in Windows Vista, than Windows XP.

Additional cost to computer user

But, with Windows Vista, it is hard time for people with old systems, as they need to burn some of their extra energy, in purchasing hardware. The RAM needed to be at least 256 MB. One cannot run Vista Aero feature, without a good 3D graphics card that too should support Direct X 9.0. Performance will be slow, if the processor speed is lower than 2.0 GHz.

Final Thoughts

One thing is sure, Windows Vista surely will be a replacement for Windows XP, in terms of performance, number of rich features, the way it manages the computer resources etc. As Vista is in beta phase, we can expect decent performace when it finally comes put. Let us wait & watch.
