I have Windows 7 ultimate edition with 3GB RAM and a 3.2 GHZ processor. I had Windows Live Messenger installed, but then after i tried to install an update for windows live messenger, neither would the installation complete, nor would the live messenger application run.

I have microsoft Network Framework version 4(beta) installed. I had 3.5 before but upgraded to 4 hoping that it would sort out things but nothing works.

The error it displays says "OnCatalogResult: 0x80072ee6"

I had this same problem with my windows XP sometime back but it got installed on its own later(after maybe 2 weeks) so i dint bother finding out the problem.

Could someone please guide me so that i can install Windows Live Messenger

ps: i tried contacting windows live support team but got no yield

thanks a ton in advance

cheers!

Hi! Not sure if this will apply to you, but we had a similar problem awhile back. I'll copy and paste the reply we got at the time, but again, not certain if this is your particular situation:

Hi, from Windows Live Services Support.

I understand that you were not able to install Windows Live Products on your computer, and you receive the error code 0x80070057. We value your interest in our product. Let me help you with this issue.

You may encounter this error if there was a problem downloading the necessary files from Microsoft Update. To fix this issue, we need to uninstall the Windows Live installer, install the necessary components for Live products; then re-download Windows Live Installer.

Please follow these steps:

1. Remove all older versions of Windows Live products. Please see the following KB article for steps on how to remove these services http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;938275 But do not perform step 9 (Reinstall the release version of Windows Live Services).

2. Manually install the following components: (click on the links below to bring up the installation page and follow the instructions provided)

.Microsoft .NET 2.0 - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5

.Windows Imaging Component http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8e011506-6307-445b-b950-215def45ddd8

.Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=85e0c3ce-3fa1-453a-8ce9-af6ca20946c3

3. Visit this site to install Microsoft updates on your computer.

http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx?returnurl=http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate&ln=en-us

4. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Live and delete the Installer folder

5. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data and delete both Windows Live Installer and WLInstaller directories if you have them.

6. Restart your computer. This is a must.

7. Download Windows Live Installer at http://g.live.com/1rewlive/en/WLSetup.exe and follow the prompt to install the software.

Please let us know the results of trying these steps, and whether you continue to require assistance. The more details that you can provide about your results the better we will be able to continue troubleshooting.

Thank you for using Windows Live Services

Good luck...Since it's a different error code, it might not solve your particular problem, but may at least point you in the right direction...

You might fix your problem in the first couple of steps:

Start > Run regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

Start > Run > cmd ipconfig /flushdns

Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart

Try updating again... same crappy message!

CrapCleaner: www.ccleaner.com/download

CCleaner > Tools > Uninstall all the windows live crap

Restart and try again

Still 0x80072ee6!

Start > Run > regedit ctrl+F live Enter, read, delete folders containing windows live, > F3 repeat until done... takes a while

CCleaner > Cleaner > Run Cleaner

CleanUp!: www.stevengould.org CleanUp! 4.5.2 Download

CleanUp! > CleanUp!, ahh flush the crap down the toilet.

CCleaner > Registry > Scan for Issues > Fix selected issues > No > Fix All... repeat many times until it cant find any more.

RegCure www.regcure.com

RegCure License (OFFLINE ONLY, disconnect!):

2C002-CA320-85D50-4D57F

Start > Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks delete RegCure tasks so it wont automatically start when you are online.

RegCure > Scan > Fix repeat many times, uncheck the things that take long time to speed up, then check them again.

Auslogics disk defrag: www.auslogics.com/en/software

(Supposedly faster than what you have)

Auslogics Disc Defrag > Defrag

Restart and try again... now you are jumping up and down all excited, but still 0x80072ee6. I just made you go through all that trouble.

You can just give up like me, the error is probably because you got some special kind of internet like me, I got cellphone connection.

Then you know that the updating thing won't work with your connection, try running it from a friends house or something.

Here is what FINALLY installs the latest version with no problems.

http://g.live.com/1rewlive3/en/wlsetup-all.exe

(134MB, version 14.0.8089.726)

wlsetup-all.exe follow the procedures, only check the messenger and don't let it install stupid stuff. Install, then delete wlsetup-all.exe

There you go! It FINALLY WORKS!

Next FORCED update, download a new installer.

I used to have home windows ninety eight. No offense, but it surely ******* sucks! Almost the whole lot you do, the little factor that claims "an unlawful operation has be preformed and might be close down" comes up and closes the software. You are not able to down load some thing on home windows ninety eight. I attempted down load aol immediate messenger and different matters and it does the identical factor. Did you ever suppose that probably you must improve your pc to Windows XP? XP is satisfactory
