Why doesn't my computer PDF documents?

This question may seem to go all over the place. But I will try to keep it as brief as I can. My computer seems to dislike PDF files. Firefox won't even open them. If I go to a website that has a PDF, it tries to crash Firefox. Then I am unable to open Firefox again. I get an error telling me that Firefox is already running. I have updated to the latest level of Firefox.
IE8 seems to have no trouble opening PDF documents. But I can not open them once I have saved them to my desktop. I have to use Foxit to open them. I have updated to the latest level of Adobe, but my computer just seems to hate PDF documents.
I am running Windows XP on a Dell computer that is about 2 years old.
What the devil is wrong with my computer? Why doesn't it like PDF documents? Is Firefox really not all it is cracked up to be?
I am not overly technical with a computer. But I am willing to try simple fixes if there are any.

Use the add remove to uninstall Adobe Reader and Foxit. Why? Because somehow the installations are conflicting with each other.... Having an alternative PDF viewer like Foxit is a good idea because the Adobe product has become larger and slower then other versions. I personally use PDF-XChange http://www.tracker-software.com/fckfiles/image/home/Download-Viewer-Button.png but feel free to download and install Foxit again. Make sure that when you install either product make sure you tell it to autoload in Firefox if you give it that option.

It probably has to do with the fact you are using both Adobe and Foxit. They both have browser plugins. Uninstall one or the other or at least choose which one you want to use in Firefox and disable the plug-in for the other. In Firefox go to Tools>Addons

running firefox, use openoffice to open pdf, msexcel, msword files, never had a problem of any kind.
