In software testing, test automation is the use of special software (separate from the software being tested) to control the execution of tests and the comparison of actual outcomes with predicted outcomes.[1] Test automation can automate some repetitive but necessary tasks in a formalized testing process already in place, or add additional testing that would be difficult to perform manually.
A Test Automation Framework is built in implementing Test Automation across a large number of customer engagements.
It is tool-agnostic and can work in parallel with multiple industry standard tools available in the market. It is highly tester and business friendly.

There is manual testing where the Tester manually (physically) conducts the test. Then there is automation testing where the test software automatically runs the tests. The problem with automated software is it takes a lot of time and effort to set up so its not always the most viable option. I found a facebook article explaining it in more detail ;p - https://www.facebook.com/SoftwareTestingInterviewQuestions/posts/592081367593794

Automated software testing is a technique in which software tools execute pre-scripted tests on a software application before it is released into production.
