1st: download Virtual PC software (Virtual PC, VMWare Workstations).
2nd: choose OS that you want to install.
3rd: You can mount partitions from other OSs and use that files if they are supported by your virtual PC OS.
4th: you may need less tha 100GB, half of it is more than enough.
5th: download any CD/DVD Emulators (UltraISO or Daemon Tools if host OS is Windows)
6th: download OS iso image.
7th: mount OS iso into Daemon Tools (as a variant)
continue installation from this iso image following onscreen instructions on virtual PC.

You need an installation disk (virtual image/real) of the OS you want to install. You need to have at least 100 GB of free disk space that will be used to install the virtual OS on and be used as a hard disk drive for the virtual OS (you should make a Data Partition and a Partition for the OS (in the virtual OS)).
PS: Theoretically the virtual OS will not see the real HDD or it's data. This means that you can't use it and you need to install again the drivers.

What kind of operating system do you already have? OS X or Windows? If OS X, just use boot camp.
If you use Windows, you can dual boot Linux. Just type in Linux on Google... or Yahoo... or whatever, and once you find their website, click on it, and find the download Linux button. (totally free) Once downloaded, take an empty CD, and burn the Linux OS onto the CD. Then put it in the CD/DVD drive. Turn off your computer, then turn it back on, but while you do so, keep on clicking F12 until it shows a different screen. Then just click boot from CD (something like that) and Linux will install.
If you have a Mac with bootcamp, just go to this website for help.
