There is a free, good, small program that will assist. Its called "CCleaner" and can be downloaded from its parent website www.piriform.com, or just from www.ccleaner.com
CCleaner has a few sections but they are simple to use, and have icons to help identify them.
If you know you have "cookies" that you want to save, I'd start by going in CCleaner to the Options menu and identifying the cookies you wish to save. Otherwise skip this step and go strait to "Cleaner" (currently pictured as a broom).
Under Cleaner, simply click the Analyze button and wait. CCleaner will inspect your computer for cookies and other junk taking up space. Once analyzed, simply click Run Cleaner. CCleaner will remove all the junk. Note that on the first few times you use it, it may take a while since it will find a lot.
There are several other nice features in CCleaner, such as a simple to use Registry cleaner, and features under tools that allow uninstallation of programs you no longer need and disabling of programs that start with Windows at startup.
If you end up liking CCleaner, try its new free sister product Defraggler (also at the www.piriform.com website). It uses a new method to rapidly straighten and defragment files which will hopefully increase speed and performance.
