Database Administrator (DBA);;;;;;;

DBA Responsibilities;;;;;;;;;

The job of the DBA seems to be everything that everyone else either doesn't want to do, or doesn't have the ability to do. DBAs get the enviable task of figuring out all of the things no one else can figure out. More seriously though, here is a list of typical DBA responsibilities:

* Installation, configuration and upgrading of Oracle server software and related products

* Evaluate Oracle features and Oracle related products

* Establish and maintain sound backup and recovery policies and procedures

* Take care of the Database design and implementation

* Implement and maintain database security (create and maintain users and roles, assign privileges)

* Perform database tuning and performance monitoring

* Perform application tuning and performance monitoring

* Setup and maintain documentation and standards

* Plan growth and changes (capacity planning)

* Work as part of a team and provide 7x24 support when required

* Perform general technical trouble shooting and give consultation to development teams

* Interface with Oracle Corporation for technical support.

* Patch Management and Version Control

DBA Skills Required;;;;;;;;;;;;

* Good understanding of the Oracle database, related utilities and tools

* A good understanding of the underlying operating system

* A good knowledge of the physical database design

* Ability to perform both Oracle and operating system performance tuning and monitoring

* Knowledge of ALL Oracle backup and recovery scenarios

* A good knowledge of Oracle security management

* A good knowledge of how Oracle acquires and manages resources

* A good knowledge Oracle data integrity

* Sound knowledge of the implemented application systems

* Experience in code migration, database change management and data management through the various stages of the development life cycle

* A sound knowledge of both database and system performance tuning

* A DBA should have sound communication skills with management, development teams, vendors and systems administrators

* Provide a strategic database direction for the organisation

* A DBA should have the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines

* A DBA should possess a sound understanding of the business

DBA Qualifications;;;;;;;;;;

* Must be certified as an Oracle DBA. See Oracle Certification Program.

* Preferably a BS in computer science or related engineering field

* Lots and lots of EXPERIENCE

Application Database Administrator (ADBA);;;;;;;;;

Application DBA's or ADBA's are responsible for looking after the application tasks pertaining to a specific application. This includes the creation of database objects, snapshots, SQL tuning, etc.

Typical ADBA responsibilities:;;;;;;;

* Implement and maintain the database design

* Create database objects (tables, indexes, etc.)

* Write database procedures, functions and triggers

* Assist developers with database activities

* Tune database queries

* Monitor application related jobs and data replication activities

Applications Database Administrator (Apps DBA);;;;;;;;;;;

Administration of the Oracle E-Business Suite environment, including the normal DBA and ADBA functions for such an environment.

Oracle Developer;;;;;;;;

Person that develops application systems that will de deployed on an Oracle database.

Generic responsibilities;;;;;;;;;

The responsibilities below can be added to any of the above.

* Complete time sheets

* Document work performed

* Interview new candidates

Database Administrator Vs Database Developer

A web designer makes the visual aspect of the website. They might even be the one actually implementing the design (via xhtml and such). The web developer might implement the designers design too. But the developer will definately design and implement the application(s) that provide the website with it's real functionality (providing the bridge from the website that the user sees with the backside, such as the database, securit software, and so on). The database designer would be the one that would design the database schemas that the applications written by the developer would interact with. Usually in practice, the web developer and the database designer would be the same person or team of people.

Web Designer actually designs the web site. So if you see the yahoo answer screen, you see the greenish colored "ask", "answer", "discover" etc.. all these are designed by web designers. They also do all the layouts and decide where each content/objects will be placed. Web developers are the progromers who work behind the scene. If you click on that 'ask' link above, where does it take you? what will result in the action of clicking that link? So all the backend stuff.. that's what developers create. And it is normally not simple as creating links since even designers can do that. The new technologies, such as php, .NET, java, etc are the main concerns of the developers. Database designer/developers are the ones who create/maintain the actuall database. If you been to e-bay or amazon, you are required to make a user account before buying anything. Where does the account information go after you create one? It goes through the database. Normally the database people and the web developers will coordinate the transition part, and once the information is inside the database, it is the database people's responsibility to maintain their information. When you try log in to your account, the website's backend script will run through the database and then varifies if you exist and the password is correct, then after, will let you in.

Being both a DBA and Developer I believe that the role of developer generally needs to go away. Most database developers (not all) are software engineers that transitioned to database developer. Unfortunately this is going the way of the dodo bird. DBAs are the ultimate resource for database knowledge and should be well-versed and the best person to be writing SQL code, procedures, etc. I've spent years fixing developer's code and changed the rules so that all code plus DBA work goes through me. Much easier than fixing bad code. Read my "#1 Database Problem" blog entry below for more info.

This is what i think it should be:

Developer creates and designs the database like for a new start-up company.

Admin then maintains the database and can make changes to it if needed later(according to companies requirements).

A database developer writes and modifies databases. Data in a database can be reorganized, dispersed, and accessed in a number of ways. Databases are important to companies and organizations, because they contain records or files, such as sales transactions, product catalogs and inventories, and customer profiles.

Database developers create management systems to provide effective and efficient access to information stored in databases. They provide expertise and guidance in the design, implementation and maintenance of database management systems. Database developers control the design and use of the database and they also determine the way the filing systems will be organized and accessed. An important part of this work involves implementing and controlling security procedures to protect the database from accidental or intentional damage or loss.

They must be good at communicating not only in computer languages, but with people as well. They not only develop the programs, but write up descriptions about them, prepare manuals, help screens, or explain the new systems in person to users.

A database administrator (DBA) is responsible for the performance, integrity and security of a database. Additional role requirements are likely to include planning, development and troubleshooting.

The work of a database administrator (DBA) varies according to the nature of the employing organisation and the level of responsibility associated with the post. The work may be pure maintenance or it may also involve specialising in database development.

Typical responsibilities include some or all of the following:

•establishing the needs of users and monitoring user access and security;

•monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast query responses to 'front end' users;

•mapping out the 'conceptual design' for a planned database in outline;

•considering both 'back end' organisation of data and 'front end' accessibility for end users;

•refining the 'logical design' so that it can be translated into a specific data model and more....check this site
