The programs listed above from the others, are great but they are also very expensive. For most home studio production you will need something more affordable, easy to use and still have high quality beats.
If you want something that won't limit you either in creativity or quality Beat Thang is awesome. You can use external controllers, and keypads and keyboards and it records and has great samples all high quality.
If you just want high quality and bang out beats on your computer then Dubturbo is great. 44.1 wav file samples. High quality presets, tons of drum kits and easy to use.

Try Propellerhead's Reason software. This is a great tool as though you have loads of 19" rackmount of equipment right there in front of you. You can even turn the equipment round and re-wire it so that it doesn't work any more! :-) As well as including drum machines, sequencers samplers etc., the app is loads of fun to "play" with. The professionalism of your final product, regardless of what software you use, will also be dependant on other hardware that you have integrated into youe setup. Do a search for it and have fun!
