FREE version of coarse. I am a heavy gamer and plan to use a dual boot set up between a version of linux and Windows XP. Using XP as my gaming and Linux as my web surfer. What version is best to go with XP? Easier to work? Ideas?

For gaming there is XP

For everything else there is Linux

WHY LINUX IS BETTER

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is Ubuntu 9.04 based. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

The Perfect Desktop - Linux Mint 7 (Gloria)

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 7 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint also has a feature called mint4win based on the Wubi installer (Ubuntu) http://wubi-installer.org/ which enables you to install Linux Mint within windows

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Linux Mint 7 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Personally I run PCLinuxOS 2009-1 KDE (this has to be downloaded from a torrent) (I didn't like PCLinuxOS 2009-2 KDE) and Windows dual boot. PCLinuxOS is Mandriva based and uses .rpm files similar to Red Hat. Easy to update and fairly easy to use. Its Desktop Environment is similar to Windows so you should feel comfortable with it. For Simple, I would suggest Mint Linux, it is based on debian and Ubuntu files, sort of Windows looking. You have the right idea, keeping Windows for Gaming purposes and probably have files or programs you like to use. Best of Luck.

Impending Flame-War Linux.

Pick one of the top seven GNU/Linux-based distributions at http://www.distrowatch.com

At the moment, they are:

1 Ubuntu

2 Fedora

3 Mint

4 openSUSE

5 Mandriva

6 Debian

7 PCLinuxOS

If you've only experienced Microsoft Windows, you might want to stick with a KDE 3.5.x-based distribution --- although this is strictly for similarity-to-Windows issues. KDE 3.5.x will be less of a change for you than the KDE 4.x or GNOME desktop environments This is strictly opinion.

Number 17, Kubuntu Linux, is the KDE-based version of Ubuntu. You might add that to your list of choices.

I am quite partial to PCLinuxOS, but for reasons that would make GNU purists (justifiably) angry.
