Question:
How do you get level 4 to show up in the table of contents in word 2010?
2011-02-18 07:15:03 UTC
I've added an extra level for to the automated table of content in word 2010 but when I update the TOC table level 4 doesn't show up - only level 1 - 3 appears in the TOC.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Hi Jon,

I'm assuming you've used a Heading Style to format the level 4 stuff?

I'm on my Office 2007 computer at the moment but, from memory, I think the Word 2010 process is identical:

If you have, to incorporate the Level 4's you need to:

* click somewhere within the existing TOC

* click the References tab

* in the Table of Contents section, click 'Table of Contents'

* on the menu, click 'Insert Table of Contents ...'

* in the Table of Contents dialogue box, towards the bottom, in the box next to 'Show Levels', either click the up arrow until you get to '4', or just type the '4' in

Leanne,

I am using Word 2010 and followed your procedure to the letter, but the Table of Contents always reverts to 3 levels. Is the Template somehow interfering with changing the Show Levels input?

James -

right click at inserted TOC >'edit Fields" > scroll 'field names' down to 'TOC' and select > click 'Table of Contents' > you will see a dialogue screen with preview panel > go to lower left section of 'General' and at 'Show levels' select the level you want > click 'OK'.. etc

Hope this helps.. this is what worked for me.
