Try Gimp. It's not as user friendly as photoshop, but there are many tutorials and instructions online.

Have a look at PhotoEditorX. it has a lot of features and is cheap and it's a good start to working on your photos without the expense of Photoshop. You can eventually get Photoshop when you can afford it.

Personally, I don't think there's anything that compares to Photoshop. Save up the $600.00, or put it on your credit card. There's also a free 30-day trial you can use. And also a less expensive student version.

Why Kitty. Why for the love of designing did you have to ask me to open that can of worms. Well in this case I see it as beluga caviar on a Triscuit with minced garlic. I say Gimp. When I say Gimp I do not mean the program found here http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ and verified virus free here http://download.cnet.com/GIMP/3000-2192_4-10073935.html . I am talking about Gimp on steroids. Well ok I am talking about that Gimp but my Gimp is so much more. How do you get it? Well FIRST download http://www.deviantart.com/download/74889017/Gimp_Python_support_easier_by_photocomix_resources.zip This is so that Gimp can utilize python plug-ins. The next generation of Script-fu is now Python-Fu. It's like having a backward compatible gaming console. While it supports the old script-fu it also supports Python language. When you open that with WinZip or AlZip or TugZip or whatever then install the last file first which I think is Python 2.5.2 . AFTER that install the rest. NOW install Gimp. When it says ummm Express or custom choose Custom. Make sure the PYTHON SUPPORT box is checked. Go ahead and install it. DO NOT OPEN Gimp YET. Now install G'Mic http://gmic.sourceforge.net/gimp.shtml . Now Install PSPI from here http://tml.pp.fi/gimp/gimp-pspi-1.0.7.win32.zip . WHY PSPI? Photoshop Plug-in support. Did you just here what I just said. Are there words coming out of my mouth. Must I swim across the English channel and climb on top of the Himalayas and scream it from the mountaintop and declare it unto the world? No? Ok. Install PSPI with the help of this tutorial http://www.instructables.com/id/Photoshop-Plugins-In-The-GIMP/ . This opens a WHOLE NEW WORLD( no relation to Alladin or Peabo Bryson ) of .8bf plug-ins to you. Ok. Now your Gimp can handle python fu, script fu, a ton of .8bf Photoshop plug-ins in addition to the what Gimp comes equipped with out of the box so to speak. Use this page to learn WHERE the heck am I supposed to install these scripts and plug-ins and brushes and patterns and and and. Oh by the way http://www.deviantart.com/ is a GREAT place for some digital art and many Gimp scripts, brushes, plug-ins and so much more. YES Gimp can use .ABR photoshop brushes. just download the .abr file er PS brush into your Gimp brush folder and that's it. http://thepluginsite.com/resources/freeps.htm is a great place for Photoshop plug-ins. When that instructables site asks you to make a PSPI folder for Gimp to look in make two. One for Plug-ins you just downloaded and one for working plug-ins. Some of the plug-ins don't work and others will return a memory violation which involves learning about DEP and adding more than just Gimp to the exceptions. I've done it but it can be daunting. Anyways in ANY case test the plug-in first and then move to your "permanent" folder. Words to design by? Save every ten minutes. If you're working on an existing image ALWAYS work on a copy. ALWAYS make a duplicate. This way if you mess up horribly and end up flattening the image or saving it or any number of problems arise you will have the original in addition to the rough draftS you have saved. This way we don't see you here a month from now pulling out your hair asking how you can retrieve 3 hours of hard earned work because your computer froze or the electricity went out or your cat turned off your laptop while you were AFK. Why does your Gimp create a Gimp 2.0 and a Gimp 2.6 folder when it is in fact Gimp 2.6.11? Gimp 2.0 is the folder when you want to install something for everyone if multiple accounts are on your computer. Gimp 2.6 is just for you. Why would someone go through all this? Why? Why would I want to spend $600 when I can combine my available resources, still be able to use some Photoshop specific plug-ins and have one heck of an editor for FREE? I have the best of both worlds. I am having my cake and eating it too. It took a little work and My Gimp is growing on a weekly basis.

Yes I LOVE Gimp. Yes I have 153 photoshop plugins. Yes my Gimp has blown up to 3.2 GIGs when it was only a couple hundred MBs initially. If you're still reading this you're done.
