My laptop will not boot up. Instead I get this error code unmountable_boot_volume. Is there any way I could re-install XP during boot up? I have an XP CD.

XP CD is an Install Disk right? Not an Upgrade or Backup?

Format the HDD. Put in the CD and follow the instructions.

Tada. :)

DONT FORMAT you will loose everything and most the time your MBR just gets messed up do what im saying it will take 5 min and your computer will load just the way it used too quick and easy

put in the xp cd and run the recovery console it will be the first option to repair when xp setup loads ( a blue setup screen)

it will turn into a black dos screen

in the command prompt type chkdsk /r

when its done type fixboot.exe it will say it will write a new master boot record and push Y

restart the computer and that will fix your problem 90% of the time. I have used this method to fix over 30 computers with the same exact problem

If you are experiencing a kernel panic displaying uncountable_boot_volume i would advise you get a Windows XP CD. This doesnt sound like anything that could easily be repaired by any of the basic recovery methods.

Search on Ebay for "windows XP installation CD" or something like that.

If you are wanting to re-install your operating system, this will require a hard drive reformation, which will delete ALL files on your hard drive. Backup your hard drive before proceeding to save any files you want to keep!

Follow these instructions for reformation and re-installation of Windows XP:

Hope that helps!
