I've tried to install it 2 times in the past and XP didn't work at all after that. However, I hadn't followed the directions, and Norton and other programs were still running during the installation.

If I download the install file and install it in safe made, will it work this time? And furthermore, is it even that important?

Do not use the windows update to do it, download the update from microsoft. Disable all Anti-viruses/Firewall or even remove them. Take off all themes/blinds etc. and then perform the update.

service pack 3 is not required so if it doesn't work leave it alone but do install service pack 1 and 2
