why does explorer.exe keeps running in the background?

even when i only use the internet i can still see in the task manager (i have windows xp) that eplorer.exe is still running in processes and uses about 17 mb,do you guys know why,or maybe it also in charge of the taskbar or something,i heard it can be a virus.

It's the Windows GUI. Shut it off and you shut down the computer.

explorer.exe is the shell that runs Windows--your desktop, taskbar, etc. It's not the same as iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer).

Its windows running in the background. If you end that task in task manager your computer will shutdown.

Jeff is correct, however, this doesn't prevent killing the process.



Open up a command prompt window and type "TASKKILL /F".



Warning though, this may corrupt windows.
