okay..
So im doing my science coursework at the moment. So in my class I copied the file onto my USB pen so i could do some work at home, and I just tried to open the file and it said "this file was created in a newer version of microsoft office word. do you want to download the compatibility pack so that you can work with this file?" and I really don't want to download anything and please don't just say download the newer version of word because I heard there's a way you can change the file.. thanks in advance.

The only way to change the file is from the computer that you created it on. You would have to save it again as a lower version of Word in order to open it.

However, what your version of word is telling you is there is a patch for your current version that will allow it to open the file you have. It would be much easier for you to download the compatibility pack than go all the way back to use the computer and save the file all over again in a lower version.

There are two ways you can get your version of Word to read and write that file:

1. You can convert it to the older Word .doc format. Unfortunately, you need Word 2007 to do this.

2. You can download and install the free Microsoft Compatibility Pack, which will let Word 2003 use and create the new .docx format. Note that this is NOT the free trial version of Office.

It's your call.

The only way to make it work is to download the compatibility pack, which is free. You don't have any other choice I'm afraid.
