i downloaded realtime player and converter, but im not sure if its safe or legal to use

Its certainly legal, and as far as I'm aware safe to sue and install.
However as with any media player, using it for copyrighted material is indeed, illegal
It must be pointed out, previous versions had adware and there is the option to have it in this one, personally I would find a different media player.

and yea no one really uses realtime player.......the vlc player can play every format on the planet
and with a plug in you can play mp4

Realplayer sucks. Get Winamp...they don't send stuff back to their handlers.
