I just installed the Microsoft Office 2008 for my Mac this morning. I was typing an essay and it x'ed out because it said it had encountered a problem. Needless to say, I lost half my essay. Now when I was trying to open the document in Word, it wouldn't open. I tried rebooting my mac in safe-boot mode and now Word is completely gone. When I tried to open the essay, it opened in what looked like the mac version of notepad.

Can some please tell me how to find the Word program?

I'm new to macs and any help is greatly appreciated

It sounds like you accidentally dragged Word's icon off your dock.

Open the Applications folder, then look inside the Microsoft Office folder. Drag the icon for Word over to your dock and let go. You should put it next to other applications on your dock.

Your essay will reappear as soon as you re-open Word.

Be sure to use Word's Help menu and do Check for Updates. Install all the updates.

To the moron who wrote that Microsoft Office is not made for Macs - Micorosft Office is a MACINTOSH application that was ported to windows, not the other way around. Microsoft Office is as pure a Macintosh application as there is. Microsoft Office has been on the Mac years longer than it has been on Windows. In fact, Microsoft made Office for Mac before they even made DOS, much less Windows. OpenOffice is a WINDOWS application that runs in X11, not a mac application.

Microsoft Word for Mac is sold separately, but it's often a better deal to buy the entire suite. It costs more separately because it is licensed for business use. Home and Student suite comes with the same version of Word, but is less expensive because it is not licensed for business use.

Microsoft Office and Macs do not seem so mix. I would recommend using OpenOffice. OpenOffice is free, open source software available at OpenOffice.org. It is available for Mac OS X.
