1 Most distros will work fine on a full fledged laptop, as opposed to a netbook. You can always check the specs for the preferred hardware to be sure. Do not go with the minimum specs, that could lead to a slow computer. Ubuntu and linux mint are 2 good distros fro beginners and both have the live cd.

2. a. The dvd image has a lot of extra software that you might or might not use. Generally it is best for someone who does not have a good internet connection. The cd is the preferred download.

2. b. gnome is a desktop environmnet

2. c kde is another desktop environment. You might think of them as the same as the look and feel of what win 98 looks like and win 7. Not the underlying system but just the look and feel. You can download and install both gnome and kde on your linux system and select which to run when you login. In other words you should try both to see whcih you like. There are a couple other desktop environments that are not as poplar and are very light for low ram systems, or for people who want something "clean" and simple.

3. You can boot directly from the dvd if you burned it as an iso and not just a file. You can run linux from it and not make any changes to your system to see how it runs. It will run a litte slowly because it is running entirely from the dvd and not the hard drive.

I would suggest ubuntu or linux mint after you give opensuse a try from the dvd.

For best result read the documentation on the website for how to install and use linux. Linux is different form windows and you need to be aware of the difference to avoid a lot of frustration. The ubuntu documentation is excellent and since linux mint is based on ubuntu the documentation is also good for linux mint.

Good luck

If you're not very good with computers, ubuntu is the easiest Linux to operate, in my oppinion. If your laptop is quite old, x-ubuntu may run better on it. If it's pretty new and fairly fast, plain old ubuntu should run just fine. To my knowledge, both of these .iso's have a live cd option after you burn them to a disk.

You obviously need to stay with Windoze until you learn enough to make some educated decisions on your own!
