Online spreadsheet has values typed as text, so I cannot use formulas - I get VALUE error everytime. Help?

Excell 2007 is software. Instructor had us download financial statement. I think problem lies with way spreadsheet set up. Convert numbers in columns from text to formulas.

Changing the format of a cell (how it looks) doesn't change the data in it. A date, for instance, is a floating point number, no matter how you format it. A text field, even if the text is "1" (without the quotes), is text, it's non-numeric and you can't use a numeric formula on it.

in a spare column set =Val(couumn whos numeric value you want)
If column a was text and column c was blank you'd type in C1
=Val(a1), then just click and drag the calculation down column C, or copy c1 and paste into as many cells in C as you'd like.

Just select the columns containing numbers and then right click and select "format cells" and in the first tab select "number" instead of "text"
