Hi.
I have a laptop with an upgraded 160gb SATA hard drive, which was working fine until recently. However, when I tried to boot the device yesterday, i recieved an error message before XP loaded stating that the "WINDOWS\system32\config" file was missing and that this could be repaired using the Windows boot disc.

When I inserted the disc and then selected the R option to recover the device, however i recieved a message stating that no hard drive could be found.

Any suggestions on how I can repair this laptop without having to restore it using my backup discs from almost a year ago. I can't even format the device due to it not finding a hard drive.

Thanks in advance

The boot disc can't repair windows installation. Because there is a program which is not able to use in your pc. so please clean the registry. for example, you can use Perfect Optimizer to check up your registry. Perfect Optimizer will not let you to be disappointed. On the other hand,Perfect Optimizer can make the free scanning regarding virus, and it may optimize the registry,Scavenging system trash, then your computer will change quickly exempt from virus's violation.

There are a number of possible problems. It may be that BIOS has forgotten where the hard disk is. Run the BIOS setup (You usually get in by pressing delete or F2 during the initial splash screen - it should tell you for about a millisecond before it moves on). If the hard disk is not recognised, run Autodetect. If it can now see a hard disk, save the settings and exit. You may find that Windows will now boot. If not, you should be able to recover using the install disk.

If that doesn't work, Windows may need a special driver for your SATA drive. This may be on a separate bootable disk.
