To install it, if you do not know the actual name of the package, you should use the Synaptic Package Manager to install the program. Using the command line is a more advanced option, which is handy if you already know the precise name of the package.

If you were not connected to the internet when you installed Ubuntu, your sources.list will be short. You may need to uncomment entries in your file. To do this, navigate to

/etc/apt/sources.list, right-click it, and and select "edit as root." Remove the "#" from in front of lines that say something like

deb http://archives.ubuntu.com gutsy main

Ok, not a full guide but here goes an advice...

Ubuntu is debian based. So you must run as root:

apt-get update

aptitude

and from here you should be able to install anything.

If not, edit /etc/apt/sources.list and add the right places.

You can find help:

man command

man config.file

still confused?? man man

ubuntu website forums

debian lists

http://tldp.org/

and of course... google

good luck and hope it helps

Try the website FAQs and man pages. There are tonnes of IRC groups as well. You need to be very specific with linux problems when asking questions.

You need to be alot more specific. What are you trying to install, and what is it telling you that you're missing?

what are you trying to install? it matters what program your installing?
