if you want to have ubuntu on the same computer that you have running xp, just go to ubuntu.com and download the latest .iso file of ubuntu as well as the program wubi. what this does is it installs ubuntu on to your computer through xp. you still have the option to run either xp or ubuntu on bootup but it is a much simpler way to do it. also, you can uninstall ubuntu whenever you want through windows add or remove programs. here is a link that will take you to the wubi installer: http://wubi-installer.org/

hope this helps. :)

you could make one new partition. ( in windows )

and then use that entire partition ( choose manual )

if you want harmless ( that is it wont delete your wiindows installation ) is Guided-use the largest continous free space

but then you dont have control about how much disk ubuntu is allowed to use.
