The windows installation will wipe it out, just delete the partitions when prompted. If you have a SCSI drive you will need to do a low-level format from the SCSI controller BIOS to wipe out the Linux bootloader.

You can decide to keep Linux on the laptop, or uninstall it, at your option. If you're installing Windows XP, just run the set up program. During install, Windows will give you options to re-format (erase) the existing programs and files, or keep them in a separate "partition" on your hard disk.

Yes, you have to as I have the experience. If you want only WINDOWS on your laptop then just install WINDOWS without uninstalling LINUX. It will autoformat your Hard Drive.

On the other hand, if you want dual OS (WINDOWS and LINUX) on your laptop, then first install WINDOWS and then iinstall LINUX. To do this you, while you intsall WINDOWS and during the partitioning the Hard Drive, you create a PRIMARY PARTITION on which WINDOWS will be installed and create an EXTENDED PARTITION. You can further devide EXTENDED PARTITION for WINDOWS partition and the remaining space of EXTENDED PARTITION can be used for LINUX.

If you want to have a dual boot system (both Windows and Linux on one machine) install Linux first and then WIndows. If you just want Windows, just install over Linux (formatting first of course...)
