i have a desktop computer that runs windows XP, i tried downloading and installing windows vista. My computer now doesn't work, it only gets to the starting screen and nothing else comes up, no shortcuts, no start bar, nothing. And a pop up always comes up and says something about not finding the right port or something. Please help!

Get Windows 7 and install that instead.

my best guess is your running a dated acer or asus system, i may be wrong but both have trouble installing windows vista and above, i know a vista-ed acer has trouble going to windows 7, last time i searched for this error online there was no fix, hopefully you get one, but i had the same problem, stick with xp, vista is a greedy OS. :)

You might want to include more information cause it seems a little unclear what the problem is. By "starting screen" do you mean the login screen? desktop? or just the boot screen? What does the dialogue of the popup actually say?

your pc may not meet minimum requirements for windows vista,

This may mean you may not have enough hard drive or RAM space
