I'm finally gonna give Linux a try but I know they've released so many OS's whats the best one for me? I'm just looking for something that is for basic uses and some gaming. I got the partition ready, plus I've worked with iso's before so no need to explain the basics however if theirs some complicated stuff that you think you should tell me please do tell... I do not know really anything about Linux xD Thanks.

Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a proprietary platform using the likes of Ubuntu and its derivative distros. However Linux does have its limitations with some applications and in particular gaming. For example I retain a dedicated Windows partition to run specific applications such as Office 2010 etc.

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 LTS then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 9 LTS can also be run straight from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Once installed I suggest upgrading from the default Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 5

Don';t expect to be able to play games on linux the same way you can on windows. Wine is good for SOME games and has its limitations.

I would suggest that you start with a linux distro that is easy to install and get running like Linux Mint.

For best results be sure to read the documentation because linux does not do things the same way as windows.

The biggest problem new users have when installing linux is that they overwrite the windows partition because they do not understand the way linux names the partitions. So be sure you have good backups of important files and the documentation should help with the terminology.

Good luck

Arch Linux is quite likely the best, as it is very minimal and is rolling release.

But it's too advanced for beginners, try OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, or Mint.

in case you nonetheless have a residing house windows installation on the pc, attempt this to get the video RAM specs: click on commence --> Run variety in dxdiag click ok once you've DirectX on there, which will open a field with files of your device. discover the video section and seek for video RAM. If it says something unusual like a million.8mb RAM, you've 2mb. I genuinely have seen person-friendly sizes like that on 2 laptops that i understand have 2mb.
