i need photoshop help?

I'm following a tutorial and it told me to use a layer mask > hide all then use a gradient and make a random shape selection and hit delete and the gradient color should show through the layer mask but when i press delete NOTHING happens, i've even tried inverting the selection etc and it still wont work.. Is my photoshop or comp just being a dick or is there a simple fix? The tutorial can be found here http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/Dazzling-Hot-Poster-Girl/53864 and its about 1/3 down the page.

Thanks!!

Well, first off, you said "use a layer mask > hide all then use a GRADIENT and make a random shape selection and hit delete and the gradient color should show through the layer mask" but that isn't right - the gradient was created on a layer BEFORE the mask was made.

Secondly, make sure that the mask is selected in the layer palette, not the image. You have to literally click on the miniature of the mask in the layer palette - depending on which version of Photoshop you are using, it will highlight in some way.

Once you definitely have the mask layer selected, you need your background color to be set to white before you can delete.

Alternatively, just select your gradient layer, draw the shape, feather it, then go to the bottom of the layer palette and click on the mask icon (rectangle with circle in it) and it will give you the mask you need without any extra useless steps like the tutorial includes.

well when you masked it, its possibly that the layer is locked try double clicking on the layer and click ok to unlock it and then try deleting it.
