Which free softawre and applications come with Linux?

I need help as i need to know what free software and applications come free with the basic linux operarting system.

The particular pieces of software can vary a bit depending on the version of linux but here is a list of software used by the versions of linux that use the rpm package manager.

RPM is a core component of many Linux distributions, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the Fedora Project, SUSE Linux Enterprise, openSUSE, CentOS, Mandriva Linux, and many others.

Actually, none.



A standard linux distribution like debian or gentoo will install just the base system and the command line. This is because it doesn't know what do you want linux for: a www server, a desktop, a file sharing machine...



After the basic install, you can install almost anything you want using apt-get (debian) or emerge (gentoo).



You can, of course, use other distributions that 'choose for you', but i will not encourage you to do this. Quote: 'Use ubuntu or suse and you will learn about ubuntu or suse. Use debian or gentoo, and you will learn about Linux.'
