Question:
what is it called when you place (not click) your mouse pointer on an image and the name of the image appears?

I recently downloaded safari to my computer and everything is working well except for a couple things: 1) in IE, whenever i placed my mouse pointer on an image, it would let me see the name of the image, safari doesn't do this and 2) some video sites that i usually go to seem to either take longer to load up or don't load at all. i figured this had something to do with my flash player but I'm not sure. if anybody has any solution to this please let me know (i hope this wasn't confusing for anybody and sorry its so long but I'm really trying to figure this out)

First of all, you shouldn't be using Safari for Windows, if you are running windows. If on a Mac then it's ok. There are many security flaws in the Windows version.

I believe that IE is the only browser that displays the "alt" tag of the image when hovering over it. This is sometimes called a "tool tip."

As others have suggested, switching to Firefox would probably not be a bad idea. If your videos still don't load, at least you know it's not a problem with Safari.

Upgrading to the latest Flash player may help, probably won't hurt.

It is called "mouseover" and the activity is related to "hovering".

In HTML (the code used to create IE & other display pages), any given item can be made to do something when the mouse pointer passes over it. If the code does not have it written in then nothing will happen. If it is there then it might be subject to some control using CSS or JAVA, but this gets complex and tricky in most cases.

The speed problem could be any of a lot of things. If you have Win 98, a DLL may have gotten replaced, Win XP does not use them. But, many other things affect both.

its called an "alt attribute", it is intended to replace the image if the image is not found or unavailable. Look at HTML source for a page and you will see something like:

The Picture

This tag was intended for when an image such as "picture.jpg" cannot be shown, it is supposed to display text instead: "The Picture" (in this example).

For some reason IE shows the "alt" description when you hover the image, which technically it is not supposed to. Most other browsers dont.

it's called 'hovering'

i'm not sure about safari.... I have used netscape and opera, IE and Mozilla Firefox. I've found Firefox to be the best.

It is user-friendly, and also has a lot of extra plug-ins/add-ons. The best thing is that the majority of the plug-ins are free.

Maybe you should try and give firefox a go, and see if it suits you.

normally it's not on your side, it's the website coding...if the webmaster didn't put any "title" on the image, so there's no title would appear when you hover your mouse on the image..else, it depends on some browsers too..and regarding the flash, you need to get a flash plugin for safari browser...go here http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

Oh my God - 14 answers and not one answered it. For it to work in browsers other than IE, you need to set the title attribute of the img.

So:

my image

It's also good practice for usability issues.

Not sure about video problems - reinstalling Adobe Flash player might do it

About the mouse pointer, the windows tath appears is called:

"the Pop-up window of the selected item".

- Safari is apple and IE is microsoft: that means no friends.

Safari and IE will not work.

Adobe Flash Player and IE are no friends neighter : will not work.

When you place your pointer on something and it changes in any way, this is called "hover" sometimes hyperlinks change color and sometimes the name of the photo shows up. other things can happen as well but it is referred to as "hover"

Its called a tooltip, set by the alt text.

Safari is the worst browser for Windows, seriously.

Get Firefox.
