anybody knows a free downloadable dvd software that can copy protected dvd's? or software that can convert dvd format .vob movies into any pc readable and compressed format, like .mp4, .mpeg, .avi, .mov, etc?

I just want to make a backup of my original dvd movies so I can use this if friends wants to borrow the movie and I don't have to give the original set. I don't want to see scratches and fingerprint marks on my discs. The least I can do is compress it on dvd or portable hdd so they can watch it on their pc's instead.

I can't recommend any because according to the law, copying commercial DVDs is illegal. But, by doing a search on the web, you might find the information you are looking for.

One site I have used for advice on how to transfer my family's home VHS movies on to DVD, compile vob files, etc. is afterdawn.com. The site contains a lot of helpful information.

DVD Shrink - http://www.dvdshrink.org/

You can choose to backup the entire disk, or re-author it to remove stuff you don't want or need, such as subtitles, multiple language audio, menus and extra features. This program is designed for backing up your DVDs - it does not save movie formats, but will make a copy of the DVD and fit it to a regular 4gb DVD-R (hence the 'shrink').

Or, you can save the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, which can be read by programs such as Windows Media Center, or something like VLC player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - free, multi-codec media player) - it reads the folders just as it would a DVD.

Not sure if DVD Shrink can convert VOB files directly, but it's something you can try.
