Image Editing Software?

Question

Hey guys, I'm a mac user looking to download a really good free image editor. I had this really good one on my PC but it doesnt work on macs (plus I cant remember what its called) but it let you combine multiple photos and edit them etc. I loved it, best part was that even though it to all these fancy things, it was free!!
Can anyone think of any image editing programs that are compatible with macs that:
are free :) and easily downloadable
have pretty advanced image editing
and allow you to combine more than one image
(im making my friend a wallpaper with like 25 pictures of us for her b-day and I want them all to be combined onto one wallpaper)

Gimp, get it at DOWNLOAD.COM, its completely free and comparable to Photoshop, which is the best for that kinda stuff.

I agree with SteveMel above. For a free programme, Picasa2 is great. Some nice effects on there and so easy to use, so it will keep the interest there. Good luck..........
