was kinda intrested in getting certified with red hat. is learning fedora in and out a good way of going about this, or is it better to go with centos. I haven't used fedora yet...I'm mainly a sabayon linux user and read that linus use this distro. also do you know of any good places to learn fedora from the inside out?

Fedora is a fine distro. which intention is mostly a testing platform for Red Hat. Fedora is 'bleeding edge' which is the reason I choose to run it from LiveCD. Fedora also benefits from very good Support and Documentation

Fedora 14 Download

http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora

Fedora 14 Installation Guide

http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/14/html/Installation_Guide/

Fedora 14 User Guide

http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/14/html/User_Guide/

You download the ISO. image of Fedora 14 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Fedora 14 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Learning Fedora will certainly not hurt you at all. It will give you everything you need to know for the TIA Linux certification. You will know about 95% of what you need to get your RHCT.

I think the TIA Linux certification is mostly a multiple choice exam. I have not taken it so I do not know for sure.

The RHCT exam is pretty straight forward. It changes from time to time, but not too much. They will give you three tasks:

1. They will set you down in front of a PC that fails during boot up. You must fix it.

2. They will ask you to do a basic Red hat install (the options you are expected to use will be on a list).

3. They give you a list of users. You will have to set up accounts based on the list.

You can use the GUI, the command line functions, or you may edit the etc/passwd, and atc/group files using vi or vim. It makes no difference, oo long as the tasks are completed successfully.

You can buy a second hand copy of RHEL (still in the original sealed box) off e-bay, and buy all the books from half.com. You can also take classes at your nearest Redhat University. I did both.

Fedora Core is the FREE version of RedHat Enterprise.

So, learn Fedora Core FIRST, then, you can look into getting RedHat Certified.

BUT, you should BUY RedHat Enterprise Linux 6, which costs $ 49, before you PAY to take the Certification Exams ($ 400 - $ 800), they are subtly different. And, it's these differences that may prevent you from PASSING the exams.

The option of windows manager quite comes right down to personal option. I've invariably been partial to KDE, but the modern day free up annoys me. I consider Gnome is an effective option for inexperienced persons. It can be relatively easy and not more tricky than KDE. Studying to use a new OS is going to take some work, so you would as well with an effortless GUI. Whenever you fully grasp Linux, then you could begin enjoying with WMs.
