Missing codec for Windows Movie Maker?

Question

I have a Canon powershot A2300 and when I imported my videos to windows (vista) they would never play with sound, I finally had to change to quicktime in order to watch them. Now that I want to use Movie maker to edit, it says file cannot be played because it's not compatible. I converted the videos from .mov to wmv and it still movie maker doesn't accept them and if I try to import it as is from quicktime it says there is a missing codec. I don't know what to do anymore I don't know what this codec is or how to get it. Please help!!

I would try Shark007 Vista Codecs. Installing that will allow more formats to be compatible with Movie Maker, Media Player and Media Center. But it is not to be installed alongside other codec packs. Its not a guarantee. You can get it here:

I have Shark007 Windows 7 Codecs on my Windows 7 machine with Movie Maker 6.0 (the Vista version) and I can now import more formats on Movie Maker. I have tried importing FLVs and it still worked.

If you just want to play the videos, get VLC media player. It has one of the largest codec libraries and will play practically anything. If you want to edit the video, I would search for other movie editing software. Windows movie and picture products are made for extreme simplicity and don't operate well with a lot of things. I personally use Sony Vegas to edit any videos. It takes some getting use to as it is more professionally software. It also costs money to obtain it legally. If you don't want something that complex, just google 'free video editing program' and check some things out.

WMM just doesn't like the Canon CODEC. However there are very good freeware editors that will recognize it.



Recommend Freemake, FileLab, or VSDC? Each is safe, fully functioning, no watermarks, will not ask for money, and are recent releases that are HD capable. Take your pick:

The Canon powershot A2300 creates videos in the Apple Quicktime .mov format, which is not compatible with Windows Movie Maker. You need to convert the .mov videos to .wmv. You can do this with either a program you download and install or use a free online video converter. You can Google "free online video converter" and "free video converter".

Convert any files you want into .vob for movie maker or use Google to determine other possible working files.
