Ubuntu 10.04 is currently unstable with more than a few BUGS

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

I learned awhile back using all kind of different distributions, not to upgrade an existing Linux, but down load the newer version and install it fresh. If you watch what is happening during the upgrade you will see it install updated files and at the same time remove files and in most cases these removed files are still required by the older system, so when it re boots you end up with a crashed system. Most of these will show an x server type of error, simply because it did not retain the current video driver set up.

The cool thing with using Linux products that I found, is that you can crash as much as you want and re-installing the O/S doesn't hurt anything else on the drive. Just re-install the most stable version you have and just wait. If you really want to do the update, make the update a full install.

If you know that your cd is good- then reboot, and re-install.

10.04 does still have a few bugs, you may want to drop down to 9.10, or try Linux Mint 8.
