if you have the expertise to install flash and codecs then ubuntu is probably better. if you dont know how then mint is an easier start because they are already installed.
mint is the 4th most popular linux distro after ubuntu, suse, and fedora. That says something - that its a good os in anyones language.
So anyway - there you have it. there are a few advantages to getting mint. Really its a personal choice though.

I started with Ubuntu and then tried a bunch of different distros including Mint. I use Mint now. But I am going back to Ubuntu. I like the Ubuntu interface better and I have used it enough to know how to get around in it. Installing codecs, flash, and media players and such is really quite easy if you do just a little homework.
I vote for Ubuntu but I suggest you try both! You may even want to try a dual boot setup (Mint/Ubuntu). It's quite easy to do.

Firstly Linux Mint is Ubuntu wearing makeup. If you want a polished out of the box distro. with much of the software preinstalled then Mint is the one to go for.
If you want to be more creative then Ubuntu, which is my preference, but essentialy Mint and Ubuntu are the same.

Ubuntu - it's easy to use and the latest distro includes GIMP and OpenOffice and it is very easy to install and use. It's the best free OS ever.

Or play video games on a console as a replace. Or attempt the rather some interior of reach linux video games. making use of linux would not would desire to ivolve ditching residing house windows. Use the terrific gadget for the activity to hand. I converted my residing house windows deploy right into a vm image it sluggish in the past, and use it for doing my tax on line, and for making use of my linux incompatible scanner. i do no longer activity in any respect, so as that works for me.
