My personal preference is Opensuse, but Linux is all about choice every Linux user probably has a different opinion, the best thing to do would be to try out several different distros and see which you like best.

The biggest advantage in all of this is that there are several different desktop environments, such as Gnome, Kde, MWM, FVWM, Xfce, fluxbox and many more, the even better news is that each one of these is infinitely configurable so apart from the default settings of each one, you can make the desktop look like anything you like.

Glitz requires CPU cycles, more RAM, and more space stored on the hard drive. That is its nature.

There are UI 'enhancers' for Windows that will change the appearance of that OS. They're all reasonably priced.

Ubuntu

Kubuntu

Xubuntu

openSUSE 10.3

Fedora Core

PCLinuxOS 2007

Mandrive Spring 2008

GNewSense

PuppyLinux

DamnSmallLinux

These, and all their siblings, are the best.

And the beauty of it all is this: You can choose whichever Desktop Environment you want. Basically, with Linux the sky is the limit.

The heartache of it all is this: The onus is on the user to learn how to accomplish tasks in Linux, and to unlearn the habits of a lifetime of that other OS.
