i am from hull and so i have no options but to use karoo to get online because they own the monopoly, but anyway heres the problem my pc completely crashed so all i was left with was the black and white bios screen giving me options like start in safe mode start with safe mode plus command prompt and so on and so on..... now none of these ever got my pc on so i rang pc world up and they talked me through a disc recovery procedure and it worked but after a short while of putting the connection disc on and being able to get onto the internet it started behaving weird such as crashing and freezing, so i took my E 220 pc into pc world and had it completely cleaned out and had extra memory in it and when i took it home it worked perfectly for about half an hour and has started crashing again but it seems to be whenever i go on the internet?? i cant use the turn off choices because they change to switch user or log off instead of turn off and restart and whatever the 3rd one is help?????????

Hmm.... I had to check up on Karoo as I'm in Scotland.

I think I'm safe to assume it's ADSL broadband, the same as I use.

It is also safe for me to assume the PC crashes have nothing to do with your windows setup. But I would check to make sure you have all the latest updates installed (particularly if its windows XP.) Don't worry about that just now though as that can be done later.

Unplug the modem and I reckon the system will function again. At the 'black and white' screen (windows startup) prompt tell it to 'start windows normally'.

If it does, it sounds to me like you have one of the following problems:

1. a faulty USB socket on your PC - maybe try a different socket.

2. a faulty USB lead - check for any cuts or bad kinks in the cable - replace if neccessary.

3. a faulty USB modem - it's all too common with usb modems. -

I recommend what I did and get yourself a decent ADSL ethernet router/modem. A good brand is Netgear and they are not that expensive - check out www.ebuyer.co.uk (or ebay) and search for DG834G. dead easy to set up! keyword is 'ADSL'.

There are cheaper brands granted but I can't guarantee the ease of setup with them.

--------------=====------------=====-----

USB modems use up resources such as power consumption, processor time and memory usage from the motherboard of the computer. If the usb modem malfunctions there is a strong probability it will make the system unstable.

Ethernet modems do all the work for you. All you do is make a network connection to it and no sweat from the PC.

I can go on all night but got personal stuff to sort out. Hope it helps. :)

Ok, the problem has to be hardware or software and the first step is to establish which.

However, lets do something simple first. Download and install Windows Defender Beta 2 and do a full scan. May as well remove any spyware.

If it crashes when offline but is left on for a while, could be a heat issue. Some component is failing when it warms up - which may not happen in the nice air conditioned shop.

If going online crashes it at once then it is either something related to how you connect (via USB to a modem, perhaps?) or to the presence of the next. If that happens, then try a different USB port/network port/modem.

If you still have problems, then ask again when you have more details of the crash - what crashed in what module?

If you're using a wireless connection turn it off. Can't think of anything else except to get your money back from PC World - sorry
