Put simply, its an update that plugs up holes that hackers might use to get into your computer.

Its important to install it.

It is usually to fix some sort of bug or critical error that many people have been having or emailing issues about pertaining to a particular piece of software. It could also be to correct a security issue found within a program. It all depends on what the system patch is for. For example, windows critical updates. If you run the windows operating system then you are familiar with what these are. These are essentially "patches" that fix bugs and errors that users have brought to their attention or developers/programmers have found themselves.

Are you referring to a Windows Update? If that is the case, then a system patch would be an update released by Microsoft that fixes a bug with the operating system. Generally these patches plug up a security hole that was discovered since the OS was released. It is highly recommended that you apply all Windows Updates (or Mac OS updates if that is your OS) so that you have the most secure computer possible.
