can I turn my pc into a ebook reader?

Question

I know I can read PDF's in acrobat and I know how to download ebooks. My issue is the look and feel of the ebook readers. Mobile ebook readers have "digital ink" so they are not harsh on the eyes. Is there software that will make my screen look like those mobile ebook readers? Thanks

Unfortunately, no. Your computer display uses a backlight to make it visible to you. Without the backlight, you couldn't see anything on the screen. What makes e-readers easier on the eyes is that they use a technology that, rather than needing to be lit from behind, can be seen in whatever light is around in the environment it is in. The closest you can get to an ebook on your PC is the software that many ebook companies (amazon, barnes & noble, etc.) now offer as a free download, and is supposed to mimic the look of their ebook software. Without the device, however, you have to deal with the fact that your computer display and ebook reader displays are made very differently and one can't really mimic the other.

Is it really worth bothering? My laptop screen is perfectly capable of displaying ebooks without any additional software, and I think most others are the same.
