I uninstalled McAfee as it was slowing my laptop and download norton instead. However, when i try to download norton this is what comes up on screen every time:

"We have detected incompatible security software installed on your computer. Please uninstall McAfee Virex or Mcafee Internet Security and try again.

Two ways. You can manually search for and delete all left over files and folders from the McAfee and also edit the registry keys, or you can go the McAfee site and download their uninstaller which is the easy way. Run that and it will take out any remaining McAfee stuff and also clean it out of the registry. Nearly every Virus company has these delete programs and they are far better than doing it through the Add/Remove Program list on your computer as it only takes out the critical files for whatever you are removing and leaves the others on your disk.

Hey there

Sometimes when you uninstall a security software there maybe residuals (ie- virus definitions, remainder registry data, ect), so it is definitely possible there is some leftovers. Try running a removal tool to eliminate those residuals. McAfee removal is called MCPR and can be found here: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331

Hope this helps!

There is absolutely no need whatsoever to install any Anti-Malware App on OS X, period!!! All Anti-malware tools are included with OS X, as are all Malware Updates, for free.

So, stop trying to install Norton.

And then, the fact that McAfee won't uninstall completely is moot.

There should be an un-installer in your Applications folder...

Any such software will cause more problems than they solve for a Mac. There are no viruses that can infect OS X and you are not very likely to ever encounter any form of malware that will affect the Mac.

You can choose from thousands of OS X apps to purchase or download and install on your Mac. If you no longer want an app, you can easily remove it.

Install apps:

>> You can buy and download apps from the Mac App Store. After downloading, apps are automatically added to Launchpad.

>> To install apps from a disc, insert the disc into your computer’s optical drive (or an optical drive connected to your computer).

>> To install apps you downloaded from the Internet, double-click the disk image or package file (looks like an open box). Open the installer provided and follow the onscreen instructions. For some downloaded disk image files, the installer opens automatically.
