I'm just working with gimp for the first time, but when I cut and paste something it still has the section selected and then I can't use the paint brush anymore :( how to unselect something that is automatically selected from a cut and paste?

You can remove/deselect an active selection by going to Select > None, or using the keyboard shortcut of Shift+Cntrl+A.

First be sure you have the correct layer selected, then push ctrl-x Go to your other image and push ctrl-v Then you'll see a floating layer in your layer dialog. Select that layer and select "new layer", or I think you can also mouse around in your image and move the layer, then move your cursor off the layer and your mouse cursor will change to an anchor. Then press your mouse button. I hope I explained that ok. Let me know if that helps or not.
