Question:
How to align numbers vertically on right hand side in Microsoft Word 2007?

I have made a contents list for a word document (not an active table of contents, just plain text), but I can't seem to get the page numbers (on right hand side) to sit evenly.
Example:
Chapter 1...................1
Chapter 2....................12
Chapter 3...................25 (I tried deleting spaces and using tabs instead but it didn't work)
-The numbers are just slightly uneven but it looks quite wobbly when viewing the page as a whole. Is it possible to align them somehow? I have tried justifying the page but it doesn't seem to affect the position of the numbers at all.
Thanks in advance.

You need to set tabs in your paragraph formatting. There are several types of tabs, you are looking for a right-aligned tab

If you show the Ruler under the View menu, at the top left corner of the window you will see a symbol like an L, an upside down T or a backwards L This is the tab type indicator. Click on it until you see the backwards L

Highlight the text you want to format

Then click on the Ruler itself and a tab mark will be placed where you click. You can then drag it into position. hit Tab before you number, and it will jump over to the tab mark

If you have numbers with decimal points, then choose the tab type that looks like an upside down T with a period. That is the decimal-aligned tab, it will line up the numbers on the decimal point, with the "dollars" to the left, and the "cents" to the right of the tab position.

If you want preceding dots to fill the space between the Chapter and the page number, you can format this in the Paragraph formatting -- Home, Paragaraph, Tabs... Leader

If you click Ctrl + R, your insertions will space from the Right margin, or you can tick the box that provides settings left, RIGHT, centre, justify.

Another method

Create a 3 cell Table → Inset Tab → click Tables

To format Table → click the "+" arrow box (top LH corner of Table) → Table Tools will display on Ribbon → Design → Borders → top box above line color → No Borders → click BORDERS to the right "All Borders"

Place the cursor above the middle row of cell & left click → Table Tools → Borders → Select the Dotted Line → click BORDERS to the right "Bottom Border" & "Inside Horizontal Border"

To resize cells → click & drag vertical lines

Here's you a video. There are lots of others on You Tube showing how to do it. I thought a video might be easier to understand vs all the steps that would have to be typed out

But you could also look here if You Tube isn't something you care for

Set a right justified tab

Right click on the top rule until you get a backwards L
