Yes , you can watch DVD movies in Windows Media Player happily provided you have a DVD codec installed. For that do this,
Install any of these softwares
Jet Audio, VLC Player, Power DVD. They will have a dvd codec and that will be installed in your computer. So you can happily watch movies either in that or in Windows Media Player(Version 11, I recommend)

You need a codec to play the DVD, as the computer needs to figure out how to decrypt the video. However, Windows Media Player is a very weak option for playing DVD's.
I would usually reccommend PowerDVD, but, you want free, so, it looks like you'll have to use VLC media player. It will play DVD's from any region, as an added bonus. Simply install it, chuck the DVD in, open it, click File -> Open Disc. You can download it from the site in the source list.

Download VLC - http://www.videolan.org/
Its a free program that has codecs that allows you to watch DVDs and some file formats that dont support Windows Media Player.
Hope this helps,

You need to buy software to play DVDs. because windows media player by default doesn't have the ability to do so. when you do, it will allow you to watch dvd's, this is why almost all computers still come bundled with powerdvd / windvd or other dvd player software. You should however be able to use VLC to play dvd's as it uses a different method that most windows programs.

What i need to know is if you are using a DVD rom to play your dvd disc.because you need one to play it.Also check to the various file formats your windows player can play by going to tools options and checking the file formats.Or maybe you will have to upgrade to a higher version of media player or use dvd player. But i think if you are using a dvd rom,you just need to install a high version media player.thanks
