I had a flash drive which my previous computer, running Windows XP SP2 and later 3, could not recognize. I'd plug in the flash drive and nothing would ever happen. Many months later I'm using a Windows 7 Home Premium computer. It was able to scan and fix the flash drive for any errors there may have been in its file system. I then found the flash drive contained many songs I had deleted from my old computer a long time ago.

I began copying those songs to my hard drive. The problem is, although the files are in My Music folder, they are invisible. Windows Media Player 12 cannot recognize them. If I insert the flash drive then copy and paste a song from the drive to My Music I get alerted the song already exists in My Music. I just paste over the song. It will then be visible. But for unknown reasons, possibly involving playing Windows Media Player, the files will again become invisible and not detected by WMP.

I guess the folder you have is not configured as a folder that is monitored by WMP OR

The files are in an unsupported format. (unsupported by WMP)

Try downloading and installing the Media Player Codec Pack from http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html

You may find that it will now recognise your music.
