Just looking for pros and cons, preferences and opinions. I'm a student, will do a lot of typing, not a gamer, need storage, flexibility, portability and ease of use. I'm also already familiar and comfortable with Microsoft's software. Thanks!

If you are going to get a tablet make sure it's not the windows RT version. Windows 8.1 will be way more powerful then the ipad. Plus Apple doesn't use Adobe flash or give you an SD card option. You'll be way more happy with a tablet with the full 8.1. Just look out for tablets with RT they are basically very limited on what they can do.

Microsoft will be nice for you, as it keeps a Microsoft feel to everything, it however, is known not to be a winner in the "tablet wars" so, on the other hand, an iPad , known for its friendly and easy to use interface, as well as a wide community of users, might be more worth learning/getting used to. Keep in mind that neither replace a laptop. I personally find all tablets be a great pain for tasks like typing, especially long papers, but that's my opinion, you might not mind. Also, most tablets can be hooked up to keybords with bluetooth now, so that might be another idea. Anyways, I'm not sure if this helped much, but hopefully its worth something !

iPad. The Surface has been a complete and utter failure for Microsoft. They wrote off a billion dollars in losses last year thanks to the Surface. Their app store has 20% of what's available for iOS or Android, and the lack of sales isn't encouraging developers to put much in their store. Microsoft has a long history of creating devices that fail and then abandoning them, leaving the owners with paperweights. Ask a Zune owner, or a Kin owner. The iPad is solid. Apple won't abandon it or the iOS platform for a long time.

Microsoft Surface is not a winner in tablet market. You can do the same MS programs using Android tabs with Google Docs. Please see the spec of the top 5 tabs in market here.
