How accurate is IP address location software?

I'm looking at where people are who visit my website, and I'm getting some pretty strange locations (including one in the middle of the sea!). Is software that determines location based on an IP address quite inaccurate, or is it reasonably reliable? Thanks.

They should be reliable for the most part, but they only show you where the ISP's of those IP's are located, not the actual users location.

It is almost impossible (without breaking some laws) to find out a users true location with an Internet IP address, what you will get is the location of either their server or their IP route (router obviously comes from the word route)



The reason you are getting locations in the middle of the ocean can be because of 2 reasons,

1. There are small islands there that are not big enough to show on a visitor locations map or

2. The internet connection is being routed through a satellite network and that is roughly the location of the satellite (in space) when that user visited your site. (I'm not a network scientist so don't hold me to that last one but that's the best explanation i can think of)
