The Microsoft Reader supports only one file format: .lit files.

.lit files are a proprietary format that only the Reader can open.

Main reason for that is so it can control the ebook's copyright permissions.

The other advantage a ebook file format like .lit has over .pdf is that PDFs are static pages. You get only exactly how everything is laid out on the page, so they are great for printing. But PDF page content doesn't scale. And actual ebook file formats like LIT files scale the text to fit the reader software window.

There are free public LIT books out there.

And to open PDF files, you need an actual PDF reader like the Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader.

Most of the current eReaders will display PDF files. PDFs are great but the drawback is that because they are created to resemble printed books and are designed to be viewed on computer monitors and printed on home-printers, they are not formatted to reflow text like dedicated ebook files. So the text in many PDFs is fixed and may look way too small on an eReader screen. You will only be able to enlarge text and scroll to read. You can convert PDFs to epub or other filetypes using CALIBRE (free download) or one of the free online conversion services.
