I personally installed Ubuntu as my second linux operating system, after taking a few college courses (computer science), and reading up on material on how a unix-like operating system works, I decided to install arch linux. I have to say that I've learned more from one arch install (and I actually mean bringing the system online into a working environment, with a login manager, graphical desktop manager, and all the software I needed for a day to day basis. I barely learned anything at all from my Ubuntu installs, all the "hard" stuff was taken care of for me.

I never had to blacklist a module, compile a kernel, compile my video card driver, edit configuration files, or even work without a desktop manager. So i was wondering what experiences other people had.

Have you learned anything by using Ubuntu?

Yes!!!!!!

Its easy for old folks.

Its better than windows.

You don't have to fool with terminal.

You just turn it on- and it works.

When your brain and body gets a lot of miles on it-you don't want to learn anything, you just want your computer to work. Ubuntu allows this.

you will purely learn the basics of Linux from Ubuntu. it rather is an exceptionally "simplified" Linux. it rather is especially used with the aid of human beings at domicile. It does no longer artwork like an corporation classification or provider classification Linux. Few companies take Ubuntu heavily. Your suited circulate is to place in Centos or another extra intense Linux on a computing device or in a VM on your computing device. set up person debts etc.

Nope. I haven't used Ubuntu, but I've learned so much just *reading* about how Linux works. I don't expect I'd learn anything extra by using Ubuntu, so I won't install any Linux until I'm competent enough.

Ubuntu is a barebone OS that is preferred by many IT techs and computer managers. the reason is simple, Ubuntu is simple. It's fast and easy and very easily manageable by both professionals and everyday users like myself.

You can bring up the Command Prompt on ubuntu and basically type in codes for managing anything from changing icon images to sustaining nuclear power plants.
