My Norton anti-virus is about to expire and it's prompting me to renew, however I don't know much about these things and I always get the feeling I'm being fleeced!!!
Do I absolutely have to have it or is there something cheaper (but just as good) that would do the same job???
If someone could please share their knowledge with me i'd be very grateful :o)

I honestly prefer Kaspersky Internet Security it is a very wonderful protection software. You can download a thirty day trial and run it without any restrictions. If you like it then just purchase a license key and add it to the app. I use it a recommend it over many other software's.

if your looking for free then I suggest you try Avira, Avast, or AVG. All work well. Even spy-sweeper search and destroy will monitor your computer well.

*UPDATE*

Virus software removes virus's and things once they are on your computer. Which is why you scan your pc with it - to find stuff to remove. As a guide, you should scan your whole pc once a week and scan everything you download off the web before using it.

Firewall software attemps to block bad things getting into your pc in the first place so there are no virus's etc to remove

< Your firewall is the bouncer at the pub - Your virus software is your mate who comes looking for you to take you home >

*Only install ONE instance of each type of security software - one virus and one firewall. Otherwise the programs will clash and be effectively useless*

I use AVG 8.0 which is completely free. It is (in my own opinion) the best free virus software out there. You can download it here - http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

It is rated at no.1 out of 291 (free) anti virus products on http://www.download.com

You should also make sure you have some firewall software installed on your computer to keep the bad stuff out in the first place. I always recommend Comodo Firewall Pro which is also free. You can download it here - http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html

It is rated at no.2 out of 112 (free) firewall products on http://www.download.com

Hope this helps!

You honestly needn't pay anything. There's a few great Anti-Virus programs that are lovely and free.

Grisoft's AVG 8, Free Edition for example is superb. It'll scan daily for all threats, including spyware, it'll scan links for you and check your email for nasty stuff too!

Avast is another great piece of software which'll do a similar thing.

In fairness, both these Anti-Virus' easily out-do a lot of major commercial scanners, so they're well worth checking out.

Do a little research and see if they sound like they do what you need. Remember, different software caters for different needs - find the ideal program for you.

You don't need to pay anything for antivirus software. You can use avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) or AVG (http://free.avg.com/). Both are free.

If you had linux, you wouldn't have to worry about viruses... FreeBSD is virus free too... And don't forget Macs... But those cost money, and Linux/FreeBSD are free. In fact, you wont ever have to worry about paying for another thing with them again.
