Guys, you need to actually read the question.

Either will work so long as you've created a virtual disk and mounted it in virtual box. The OS in the virtual machine can't access the hard drive directly.

1. Is a just a bit easier, and since you aren't on a physical disk, no reall benifit from seperating out the filesystem more than the default.

Running Ubuntu using a virtual machine will impair performance somewhat. You would have better results installing Ubuntu inside Windows

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 Main Edition which are built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Ubuntu 10.10 they are easy to install and easy to use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint has a similar installer called mint4win (mint4win works the same as the Ubuntu Windows installer so the instructions outlined above are almost identical)

If you open the Ubuntu .iso there should be a file called wubi.exe. run that. This is automatically dual-boot your computer so that you have 2 OS's. Good luck.
